This Dancerie: Paris, 1938 explores same-sex relationship as cause of Kristallnacht in video installation on Île de la Cité during Paris’ Nuit Blanche 2017

American artist, Tony Whitfield and Whitfield CoLabs is proud to announce the installation of This Dancerie: Paris, 1938, a video installation with live music, presented from dusk to dawn on October 7/8, 2017 as an OFF event of Paris’ citywide arts festival, NUIT BLANCHE 2017. The site of this installation will be rue des Ursins on Île de la Cité.

This work is the product of a collaboration between artistic director, writer, producer, director Tony Whitfield, and Paris based cinematographer Sebastian d’Ayala Valva, and actor/assistant director Oisin Stack, and American composer Andrew Alden and actor Nils Nusens. The presentation of this work is sponsored by Whitfield CoLabs in collaboration with Paris based presenter, Association Errances

About This Dancerie: Paris, 1938

In the autumn of 1938, 12,000 Polish Jews who lived in Germany, were expelled and deposited at the Polish border. Poland refused them entry. Ostensibly, in response to this event, Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, was assassinated in Paris by Herschel Grynszpan, a young German Jewish of Polish descent. As a consequence, the German government declared its indignation calling this murder an "act of war" perpetrated by the "Jewish world community" and the Nazi regime subsequently launched a pogrom in Germany that came to be known as Kristallnacht, implementing acts of extreme violence in which more than 400 synagogues and 7,000 Jewish enterprises were looted and burned, many Jews were murdered and others transported to concentration camps.

This Dancerie: Paris, 1938 focuses on the controversy surrounding the relationship between vom Rath and Grynszpan that was in dispute from the day of the event. Some versions deny any prior relationship between vom Rath and his assassin, and presume that the event was a political and "proto-terrorist" action in revenge for the persecution of Jews in Germany. Other versions speaks of various homosexual relationships between them preceding and influencing the assassination since vom Rath’s sexuality was common knowledge among Paris’ gay elite at that time.https://vimeo.com/200839814

According to Whitfield, “In this portrayal of an event that would, today, be seen as an act of “self-radicalized terror,” questions arise of the personal, human subtext and its ramifications beyond the historic cultural impact of an undeniable act of extreme violence. In the wake of events like the Pulse massacre in Orlando [Florida,] this story takes on new resonance for me…What is the whole story, below the surface, that we will never really know?”

This Dancerie: Paris, 1938 is the first presentation of This Dancerie, a ten part cycle of multi-media works by Tony Whitfield and Whitfield CoLabs that will “investigate and interpret a century of queer life in Paris” over the next five years. Tony Whitfield: Artistic Director, Producer, Director, Principal Designer/Artist, Writer

Tony Whitfield is an artist, designer and educator whose work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums including the New York’s Museum of Art and Design, Leslie Lohman Museum of Lesbian and Gay Art, The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History and the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano in Lima, Peru and published in the US and abroad. Whitfield has also written about art, new media, film, performance and design. As the president and principal designer of Red Wing & Chambers Inc, Whitfield produced custom and limited edition furniture, products and lighting for residential and small business environments. Whitfield has also held leadership positions in New York’s arts community including Director of Printed Matter, Inc., Associate Director of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Senior Policy Analyst for Cultural Affairs in the Office of the Manhattan Borough President, as well as Program Director at Just Above Midtown, Inc (aka the Corporation for Art and Television) where, in addition to being instrumental in the management, direction and development of these organizations, he was the principal staff member responsible for curating and producing public events in dance, performance, music, in live and broadcast media. Whitfield’s writing about these fields as media for cultural criticism has been included in numerous publications over the last three decades. Andrew Alden: Composer, Musician, Videographer, Editor

Frequent collaborator with Tony Whitfield, Andrew Alden is an American composer from New England. He received his BFA in Film Scoring and Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston and is the director and composer of the Andrew Alden Ensemble, which is dedicated to exploring new music in the tradition of Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alloy Orchestra, Kronos Quartet and Alarm Will Sound. Alden has performed with Evan Ziporyn and Terry Riley as a member of Gamelan Galak Tika, has scored 20 different films, including spots on NBC, and has toured nationally. Andrew currently lives in Detroit where he is freelance composer and visual artist.

Sebastiano d'Ayala Valva : Cinematographer

Sebastiano is a film director, born in London in 1978 and currently living in Paris. After graduating from Institut d’Etudes Politiques in 2003, Valva took part to the production of short movies and feature documentaries including Serge July’s Once Upon a Time … Last Tango in Paris. In 2007, he directed Transvestites Also Cry, filmed over three years and scoring accolades at various international film festivals, including the Audience Prize at Roma Doc Fest 2007 and the Best Documentary Award at the 2008 HBO New York Latino Film Festival. Valva’s current work includes feature documentaries Angel, which follows a transsexual immigrant and prostitute and his family, as well as The House of the Father, a father-son confrontation explored through architecture and film.

Joe Lumbroso, Videographer, Editor

Raised in France, Joe is a director and cinematographer with over 10 years of experience in creative direction, cinematography, graphic design, software engineering and business development. Lumbroso works as the driving force in Brilliant Champions, a full service production company in New York and San Francisco that uses a variety of methods and media to construct engaging and compelling ideas, content, and experiences. Brilliant Champion’s work includes commercial production, music videos, narrative and documentary filmmaking.

Oisín Stack: Actor, Assistant Director

Most recently seen as the murderous priest, Dermott in the BBC’ sequel to Eastenders, Kat & Alfie: Redwater, Oisín Stack is an Irish born actor working in Paris and London. Born and raised in Ireland, he took his first steps on stage at the age of 10. His vocational training as an actor began in England where he played various roles in the classical and contemporary repertoire. After traveling South America with a street theatre company he studied in Paris the Cours Florent's Class Libre and then CNSAD (National Superior Conservatory of Dramatic Art ), where he worked with Christophe Rauck, Jean-Luc Revole and Christophe Garcia, Dominique Valadier. His work since finishing his training has led him to many divers projects from performance art in the Theatre 71, to dance and theatre with David Bobée and to assistant directing, translation and acting with Cristian Soto. He also appears regularly on TV in England on the BBC, and in France on TF1. His film credits include work with Luc Besson and Lucas Belvaux.

This Dancerie: Paris, 1938, explore une relation entre personnes de même sexe comme cause de la Nuit de Cristal. L’installation vidéo sera située sur l’île de la Cité, dans le cadre de Nuit Blanche 2017 Paris.

L’artiste américain Tony Whitfield and Whitfield CoLabs est fier d’annoncer l’installation de This Dancerie: Paris, 1938,du crépuscule du 7 à l’aube du 8 octobre 2017, l’installation vidéo sera accompagnée de musique live. L’installation prendra place sur l’Île de la Cité, rue des Ursins, dans le cadre des installations OFF du festival parisien NUIT BLANCHE 2017.

Cette œuvre est le fruit de la collaboration entre Tony Whitfiel, directeur artistique, écrivain, producteur et réalisateur, Sebastian d’Ayala Valva cinéaste installé à Paris, Oisin Stack acteur et assistant réalisateur,  Andrew Alden compositeur américain et l’acteur Nils Nusens. A propos de This Dancerie: Paris, 1938

A l’automne 1938, 12’000 Juifs polonais vivant en Allemagne sont expulsés et reconduits à la frontière. La Pologne leur refuse alors l’entrée sur son territoire. Apparemment en réponse à cet événement, Herschel Grynszpan, un jeune Allemand juif d’origine polonaise, assassine Ernst vom Rath, un diplomate allemand alors stationné à Paris. Le gouvernement allemand s’en indigne et qualifie événement “d’acte de guerre” perpétré par la “communauté juive mondiale”. Le régime Nazi réplique par le pogrom aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de Nuit de Cristal, une nuit de violence extrême qui vit plus de 400 synagogues et 7’000 entreprises détenues par des Juifs mises à sac et brûlées et de nombreux Juifs assassinés ou déportés dans des camps de concentration.

This Dancerie: Paris, 1938 se concentre sur la controverse datant des jours suivant le meurtre sur la relation entre vom Rath et Grynszpan. Certaines versions présentent l’événement comme un acte politique “proto-terroriste” vengeant les persécutions contre les Juifs d’Allemagne, niant ainsi toute relation préalable entre les deux hommes. D’autres versions décrivent des relations homosexuelles entre vom Rath et Grynszpan précedant et influençant l’assassinat, la sexualité de vom Rath étant largement connue dans les élites gay parisiennes de l’époque. https://vimeo.com/200839814

Selon Whitfield, “Dans la représentation de cet événement qui serait aujourd’hui vu comme un acte “d’auto-radicalisation terroriste” les questions de l’arrière-plan personnel et humain et de ses ramifications surgissent au-delà de l’impact historico-culturel de cet acte d’une violence extrême. Suite à des événements comme le massacre du Pulse à Orlando (Floride), cette histoire prend une nouvelle résonance pour moi… Quelle est la véritable histoire sous la surface, la connaîtrons-nous jamais?”

Andrew Alden: Compositeur, Musicien, Vidéaste, Auteur
Collaborateur régulier de Tony Whitfield, Andrew Alden est un compositeur américain de la Nouvelle Angleterre. Titulaire d’un BFA en création d’environnement sonore pour l’audiovisuel et compostion au Berklee College of Music de Boston. Il est le directeur et compositeur du Andrew Alden Ensemble, dédié à l’exploration des musiques nouvelles dans le tradition de Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alloy Orchestra, Kronos Quartet and Alarm Will Sound. Alden a joué aux côtés de Evan Ziporyn and Terry Riley en tant que membre de Gamelan Galak Tika, a créé l’environnement sonore d’une vingtaine de films, dont des spots sur NBC, et a joué à travers les États-Unis. Sebastiano d'Ayala Valva : Cinéaste
Sebastiano est réalisateur, né à Londres en 1978, il vit actuellement à Paris. Les travaux actuels de Valva comprennent un documentaire Angel, qui suit un immigrant transsexuel prostitué et sa famille ainsi que The House of the Father, une confrontation père-fils explorée à travers l’architecture et le cinéma.

Joe Lumbroso, Vidéaste, Auteur
Élevé en France, Joe est réalisateur et cinéaste avec plus de 10 ans d’expérience en réalisation créative, cinématographie, graphisme, ingénierie logicielle et développement d’entreprises.  Lumbroso est l’une des forces motrices de Brilliant Champions, une société de production de services à New York et San Francisco qui use d’une grandes variété de méthodes et médias pour créer des idées, des contenus et des expériences convaincantes et attrayantes. Les travaux de Brilliant Champion incluent des productions commerciales, des vidéoclips ainsi que du cinéma documentaire et narratif.

Nils Nusens: Interprète, traducteur
Nils Nusens est chanteur, auteur-compositeur, trompettiste, claviériste, compositeur et acteur. Depuis les années 90, Nusens collabore avec les compositeurs Vincent Theard et Stephane Le Navellan (avec qui il a fondé le groupe de funk français 13NRV) et la chanteuse Angie Cazaux-Berthias. Nusens collabore aussi avec le trompettiste Cheick Tidiane Seck, et joue au sein du Bernard Allison Band à Paris et New York, son second foyer depuis 2006. Dans ces deux villes tout comme au Burkino Faso, Nusens combine ses activités créatrices avec une variété de projets progressifs et entreprenants.

Oisín Stack: Acteur, Assistant Réalisateur
Récemment vu en tant que Dermott, le prêtre meurtrier dans Kat & Alfie la suite de Eastender,: Redwater, sur la BBC,Oisín Stack est un acteur d’origine irlandaise travaillant à Paris et à Londres. Né et élevé en Irlande, il y fait ses premiers pas sur scène à l’âge de 10 ans. Sa formation d’acteur commence en Angleterre où il joue de nombreux rôles des répertoires classique et contemporain. Après avoir voyagé à travers l’Amérique Latine au sein d’une compagnie de théâtre de rue, il étudie aux classes libres du Cour Florent, puis au CNSAD (Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique), où il travaille avec Christophe Rauck, Jean-Luc Revole et Christophe Garcia, ainsi que Dominique Valadier. Son travail, depuis la fin de sa formation, l’a mené à participer à de nombreux projets ; des arts de la performance au Théâtre 71, à la danse et au théâtre avec David Bobée, et aux côtés de Cristian Soto la traduction, le jeux, et la réalisation en tant qu’assistant. Il apparaît régulièrement à la télévision en Angleterre sur la BBC et en France sur TF1. Sa filmographie inclut des travaux avec Luc Besson et Lucas Belvaux.

Once up and running, there was an audience of more than 1000 (Alexandra Raluca Bobe, the project's Paris administrator kept count) to my gratification, virtually everyone in a free pubic art context, stayed through, by comparison to other big Nuit Blanche events, a presentation which was a meditative experience (as intended) of repeated Paris, 1938 screenings and interstitial "music videos with live accompaniment" by Andrew Alden developed in collaboration with Tony Whitfield.
